Author Interview

Dr. Gage candidly discusses why he wrote The Thinderella Syndrome and what the title means:

When I first started my practice and taught behavioral techniques to help patients lose weight, I supplied them with a book called Eating Is Okay by Dr. Henry Jordan. The book became out of print and I decided to write a guide to permanent weight loss for my patients. It took me ten years to write as I only had time to write on vacation. I know firsthand what it is like to struggle with weight. I myself was forty pounds overweight and considered obese when I was working as an Intern. Through changing my lifestyle, eating habits, and jogging, I was able to shed those extra forty pounds I had gained and keep it off permanently.

People to this day still ask me how I keep the weight off. And how I have done it for so many years. It has now been twenty five years since I lost my original (pre-dieting) weight! My answer is, "You live a diet, you don't do a diet." My second answer is, "There is very little difference in dieting and maintaining a healthy weight." The patterns and styles required for one are generally still required for the other.

The book title, The Thinderella Syndrome refers to the fantasy world and unrealistic goals that people have toward dieting. People expect their fairy godmother to provide a magic solution to their overweight problem. There is no magic pill. Thinderella is really only a figment of the imagination. The real you is defined by the lifestyle you practice. Reading my book and practicing my techniques provide you with a chance to really "live a diet," to have a healthy life, and to enjoy a method that makes sense and is permanent and ultimately successful.
