May 1, 2005 -- Your mom deserves the best. After all, she has spent most of her life taking care of her children and spouse and spending little time taking care of herself. Instead of giving her the traditional flowers this Mother's Day, give her a gift of heart healthy tips that she can use for a lifetime.
Dr. Dennis Gage, M.D., Endocrinologist and author of The Thinderella Syndrome: A Practical Guide to Individualized Permanent Weight Loss (www.thethinderellasyndrome.com) wants to raise awareness of the metabolic syndrome in women, a collection of disorders that precedes diabetes and occurs when several disorders of the body's metabolism are present at the same time such as obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol placing women at higher risk for premature heart disease. According to Reuters Health April 14, 2005, results of a study by Dr. John Nestler suggests that the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome is significantly higher in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) than in age-matched women in the general population, placing them at greater risk for cardiovascular disease. Dr. Gage says that women can reverse their risk for cardiovascular disease through lifestyle change.
In honor of Mother's Day, Dr. Gage offers the following tips for permanent weight loss using his defensive eating techniques:
- Keep a food record- It is a blueprint that is needed to rebuild your lifestyle.
- Find alternate activities to reward yourself such as painting, going shopping, dancing, or gardening.
- Nighttime eating is dangerous- exercise or go to a movie instead of eating.
- "Don't be a slave to the scale"- Learn the "Gray Zone" of dieting. The scale does not measure your success or failure.
- If you are in a rush, eat "Modular food" such as Healthy Choice or Zone frozen meals or energy bars.
- Be prepared to defend the weight off by continuing your patterns year round. Don't be alarmed if you see one or two changes weakened during the year.
- Through continued patterning and awareness, a person is able to maintain a healthy goal weight indefinitely.
- Make an appointment with your doctor to find out if you are at risk for heart disease.
- Ask your doctor for thorough metabolic testing while you are still healthy.
